It's done ! Meta authorizes the return of Donald Trump to Facebook and Instagram

Mark Zuckerberg's group was to announce during the month of January if it authorized the former president of the United States to return to its social networks. His accounts were suspended in January 2021 after the Capitol riots in Washington.

Donald Trump back everywhere

It is now done. Meta, who had imposed a 2-year ban on Donald Trump from his platforms, has just reopened the door to him. With the "yes" given by the working group in charge of this question, the politician will be able to post again on Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks.

This possibility is of course very interesting for Donald Trump, who has 34 million subscribers on the first social network and 23 million on the second. With this decision, which is in addition to that of Elon Musk to reopen his account on Twitter, the Republican is now fully back on the major platforms.

“Such a thing should never again happen to a sitting president, or anyone else who does not deserve punishment! he quickly commented on his own social network, Truth Social.

Meta promises safeguards

Trump, however, did not indicate when he intended to return to Facebook and Instagram. Indeed, although he has been able to tweet again for more than 2 months now, he has not yet appeared on Elon Musk's network. But with the 2024 U.S. presidential election fast approaching, he isn't expected to remain silent for long.

In any case, he will have to be careful what he says, because Meta would have "implemented new safeguards to deter repeat offences", according to the press release posted by the firm on Wednesday. Thus, affirms the head of international affairs Nick Clegg, "in the event that Mr. Trump publishes other content in violation of the law, the content will be removed and it will be suspended for a period of between one month and two years, depending on the seriousness of the violation”. We have all been warned.
